Before laminated shells became the industry default, many American snare shells began as one carefully selected board. This is the story of the solid, one-ply shell — how it was formed, why most large manufacturers eventually moved toward plywood, and why the old method never actually disappeared.
Leedy, Ludwig, and Slingerland dominate the way collectors talk about early American drum manufacturing, but none of them invented the steam-bent shell, and none of them were ever its only practitioners. Bent wooden drum shells in America are documented back to the mid-1800s. By the opening decades of the twentieth century, makers in Chicago, Indianapolis, and elsewhere were building one-ply snare shells by the same basic logic: select a clear board, soften it with heat and moisture, bend it around a form, join the ends, and reinforce the edges where the head seats.
Leedy Manufacturing Company
Ulysses G. Leedy began making percussion equipment in the 1890s out of the Cyclorama Building and formally incorporated the company in 1903. By 1927, the repeatedly expanded Barth Avenue factory covered 78,450 square feet and had grown into one of the largest percussion operations in the world. That same period, Leedy's health was failing, and he sold the company to instrument conglomerate C.G. Conn, which moved production from Indianapolis to its own Elkhart, Indiana facility by 1930. By the time of the 1939–40 shift away from solid shells, Leedy had been a Conn division for roughly a decade — though as the Conn entry below shows, that shift doesn't appear to have been part of a blanket corporate policy.
Ludwig & Ludwig
Brothers William and Theobald Ludwig began with a bass drum pedal design in 1909; snares and timpani followed within a few years, and the company built rope-tension military drums during the First World War. A 1923 catalog lists a "Wood Shell Separate Tension" model, and the 1927–28 catalog gives a full page to the solid-wood Super-Ludwig — sold as a standing professional option, priced close to but not identical to its metal-shell counterpart.
Slingerland
Slingerland entered drum manufacturing in 1926 and bought Liberty Musical Instrument Company's shell-building tooling in 1927. A 1928 Slingerland catalog shows the two constructions coexisting on the same page: bass drums are described as laminated shell, while a matching snare is sold as the "Solid Wood Shell Model" with a solid walnut body, laminated construction offered only "if desired." In 1936, the solid one-ply Radio King became the company's defining professional snare — and stayed in the line for decades.
Lyon & Healy
Best remembered today for harps, Lyon & Healy once manufactured a much wider range of instruments out of its Chicago factory. Surviving snares from the early 1900s carry wood shells, wood hoops, and claw-style tension hardware consistent with the era's steam-bent construction. One often-cited example has been described, from photographs, as vertical-grain mahogany — but a visual read alone doesn't confirm the ply count or bending method, so it belongs in this history as a probable rather than a verified example.
C.G. Conn Ltd.
Conn is usually remembered as a brass and woodwind maker and as the conglomerate that bought Leedy and Ludwig & Ludwig — but Conn had been building its own drums under its own name since at least 1888, with a perforated-shell orchestral snare documented that early. Its 1938 "Choice of the Artists" catalog still sold a solid mahogany Standard Orchestra Snare Drum and a solid maple Excello model, both pitched as professional instruments, the year before its Leedy division moved away from solid construction. That timing is worth sitting with: it means Leedy's 1939–40 shift wasn't part of a company-wide Conn policy against solid shells, since Conn's own line was still selling them at the same moment.
Noble & Cooley
The oldest name here by four decades, Noble & Cooley supplied marching drums to Union regiments during the Civil War. Its history isn't an unbroken line of professional solid-shell snares, though: for most of the twentieth century the company's main business was toy drums, and military-drum production had ended by around 1920. It was 1980 before vice president Jay Jones, working with designer Bob Gatzen, pulled the company's original steam-bending machinery — old enough to have survived an 1889 factory fire — back into professional service. The result, the SS Classic solid shell snare, shipped in 1983 and effectively started the modern boutique solid-shell revival.
The best-documented large makers ran substantial shell work in-house, but that doesn't mean every company — especially every smaller regional brand — built every shell from raw lumber on site. Catalog language and the physical shell itself have to be checked maker by maker, not assumed from the era alone.
Leedy's Indianapolis operation is the best-documented example of how vertically integrated a percussion factory of this era could be. Contemporary descriptions identify a lumberyard, a tannery and drumhead plant, a plating shop, and dedicated shops for cases and tooling, largely under one roof. That's a real, substantial raw-materials-to-instrument operation — though the surviving record supports "raw lumber," not the more dramatic image of whole logs rolling in one door.
That degree of vertical control mattered for shell-building specifically. A company with its own lumberyard could manage seasoning and grading to its own standard, and a shop with its own tooling department could maintain the steam boxes and bending forms a run of shells actually needed. The exact bending-room equipment used at any specific factory is less completely documented than the finished drums and catalog copy, so this account should be read as a well-supported reconstruction of the general method, not an eyewitness record of any one company's floor.
The wood for a steam-bent shell had to run clear and straight-grained with minimal runout, because a knot, a check, or a grain reversal was exactly where a tight bend would fail. Moisture content and drying history mattered just as much: properly seasoned stock bends more predictably than wood dried too aggressively.
What isn't well supported is the idea that this stock was necessarily plain-sawn as a rule. Bending success depends more on species, grain continuity, and moisture than on cut orientation, and that orientation matters differently from species to species. Period catalogs document maple, mahogany, and walnut shells; none of those woods bend with identical predictability, and denser exotic species can be considerably less forgiving. A solid rosewood shell, like the one built for our own Rosewood Piccolo Snare, is a less routine technical undertaking than a maple or mahogany equivalent — a detail that's worth being honest about rather than smoothing over.
Once a board was milled to width and thickness, it went into a steam chest, where heat — assisted by moisture already in the wood — temporarily softened the lignin holding its fibers rigid. This is a heating process, not simply a soak. Pulled from the steamer while still hot and pliable, the board had to move quickly onto a cylindrical form; a metal compression strap, or an equivalent restraint, typically ran along the outer face to keep it from splitting as the inner face compressed around the tight radius.
The bent piece then stayed restrained while it cooled and stabilized. How long that took varied by shop, species, and moisture content, and it isn't documented well enough historically to state a single universal figure — some modern solid-shell makers cure a shell for as long as three months before it's considered stable. Once set, the two ends were joined at a single scarf or lap joint — the shell's one structural seam through the wall — and reinforcing rings, typically maple, were glued in near the top and bottom edges to help keep the circle true where the head seats and the hardware pulls hardest. The shell was then turned, trued, and finished, with the exact order varying by maker.
Wood-shell drums are still the favorite of many of the professional drummers. The Super-Ludwig has a solid wood shell acting as a rigid side-wall and support for the heads and tensioning rods. Ludwig catalog, "The Wood-Shell Super-Ludwig," c. 1927–28
Ludwig sold that solid-shell drum as a direct running mate to its metal-shell Super-Ludwig, using the same tension hardware and the same ten-lug professional format. The prices were close but not identical: the standard nickel-plated wood model listed at $40, while the comparable metal-shell model was $45. The catalog copy doesn't pitch the wood shell as a cheaper fallback — it's sold on tone and finish, to the same professional buyer who might otherwise choose metal.
Ludwig and Slingerland sold solid shells as an available option. Leedy went further and argued for them directly, in a catalog page headed simply "Regarding Wood Shell Drums." The pitch is framed as a scientific and structural argument — but it's still period advertising for Leedy's chosen construction, not a neutral engineering finding, and it's worth reading it that way.
Solid shells are as necessary from a scientific standpoint in snare and bass drum construction as in violins, cellos, basses, and other musical instruments. The great amount of glue used in veneer and laminated shells is the chief reason why they are so susceptible to weather changes and short-lived. Glue absorbs dampness, and the less used the better. The same page specifies a one-piece, ¼-inch steam-bent shell, guarantees it against warping, and claims some solid Leedy shells had been in continuous use for twenty-six years — a figure that lines up reasonably well against the company's own 1890s origin. That's genuine primary evidence for how Leedy built and sold its shells. It's less convincing as settled science. Early animal- and protein-based glues really were vulnerable to heat and moisture in ways later water-resistant adhesives largely solved, but cross-laminated wood can also be more dimensionally stable than a single board, not less, and violins and cellos are themselves glued assemblies — their ribs, tops, and backs just aren't plywood. The strongest honest reading of this page is historical, not scientific: Leedy was defending its own construction against a competing method that was already gaining ground in the market.
The shift away from steam-bent solid shells wasn't a single industry-wide switch, and it didn't happen on one calendar. It happened company by company, and inside individual product lines at different speeds.
Leedy's own record gives one fairly specific data point: around 1939–40, by then a decade into Conn ownership and operating out of Elkhart rather than Indianapolis, the company began moving its Broadway line from solid single-ply construction to a three-ply maple-poplar-mahogany or maple-poplar-maple shell, alongside a new lug design. That's well documented as when the standard changed. It's tempting to read that as a straightforward corporate cost-cutting move once a conglomerate had consolidated a smaller maker's operations — except Conn's own house-brand catalog complicates that story rather than supporting it. Conn's 1938 "Choice of the Artists" catalog, published the year before Leedy's shift, still sold its own Standard Orchestra Snare Drum in solid mahogany and its Excello model in solid maple, both pitched as quality instruments rather than budget leftovers. So whatever drove the Broadway line to plywood in 1939–40, it wasn't a blanket Conn policy against solid shells — the parent company was still selling them under its own name at the same moment. The more honest reading is that this was a decision specific to that Leedy product line, for reasons the record available to us doesn't fully explain.
On top of that, how clean the cutoff actually was remains uncertain: collectors have documented solid-shell examples from after the 1939–40 transition as well, and it isn't fully clear from the record available to us whether those represent leftover stock, special orders, or a genuine standing catalog option that persisted past 1940. We're not going to claim more precision here than the sources support.
Slingerland's timeline runs differently again. Its solid one-ply Radio King, introduced in 1936 alongside Gene Krupa's endorsement, remained a flagship construction through the 1940s and 1950s, with related solid-shell models continuing into the 1960s under later hardware and naming changes.

Laminated construction became the large-volume default not because it produced a better-sounding drum, but because it was faster and more consistent to build at scale: thin veneers could be cross-laminated, pressed under heat in a mold, and turned around in a fraction of the time a single board took to steam, bend, and stabilize, with far less dependence on finding long, clear, defect-free stock for every shell. A one-ply shell asked more of the material, the process, and the individual fitting at every step.
The method never actually vanished. Slingerland carried its one-ply maple snare well past the prewar period. Noble & Cooley brought professional steam-bent shell-building back from a sixty-year gap in the early 1980s. Plywood won the volume market; steam bending survived as a slower, more labor-intensive specialty — which is exactly what it still is today.
There's no single window to point to. Bent wooden drum-shell construction in America is documented from the mid-1800s. Leedy and Ludwig cataloged solid-shell snares as standing professional options through the 1920s. Slingerland's one-ply maple Radio King appeared in 1936 and carried the method well into the postwar decades under a handful of related names. Noble & Cooley brought the professional one-ply shell back into production in the early 1980s, and specialist builders — including this shop — continue making them today.
A catalog date tells you a model was offered, not the exact day it stopped leaving the factory. Old stock got used up, special orders happened, and constructions overlapped in ways period paperwork doesn't always resolve cleanly. Where we've had to guess at a range rather than state a hard date in this piece, we've said so, rather than presenting a tidier story than the sources actually back.

A Note on Method
The Rosewood Piccolo Snare built at Reflections of Chicagoland Drum Co. follows the same core logic — one board, bent into a continuous shell, reinforced only near the bearing edges. It doesn't reproduce every undocumented step of any one historical factory, and the method didn't originate in Chicago or Indianapolis; Noble & Cooley was steam-bending shells in Massachusetts decades before either city's drum industry existed. What this shop is doing is carrying forward a much older tradition that the Midwestern makers in this piece refined, marketed, and for a long stretch of the twentieth century, placed at the center of the American professional snare drum — and that a handful of builders never actually let go of.
